Project Brief
My semester-long project for my advanced typography class was to design a 48-64 page magazine on a topic we were passionate about. Video games have been a huge part of my life since I was kid, but I noticed that the overwhelming majority of gaming media and publications are targeted towards white men. This demographic doesn’t always reflect the gaming spaces I’ve been a part of, so I wanted to create a magazine that I would have loved to read when I was younger, which is how the concept of Pixel Perfect was born. I wanted the magazine to be reminiscent of early 2000s teen magazines while also discussing serious issues in the gaming industry.

This magazine was essentially a labor of love, and it is personally my favorite project from university. Although it was not required in the creative brief, I chose to write almost all of the articles in the magazine myself because of how much I love talking about games and the gaming industry. I feel like gaming culture has shifted almost entirely away from physical media, which makes me a little sad! There is something special about being able to flip through a printed magazine that cannot be replicated through a screen.
On a technical level, I gained a much more advanced knowledge of Adobe InDesign than before. This project helped me truly many of the functions that the software is capable of, so I am much more confident designing using this program.
